A driving licence now works like a small points wallet, and each offence can take something out of it.
The 12-point licence system is easy to understand once you see how it works. This guide explains the basics in plain language and how it relates to renters.

Each licence has 12 points. The number deducted depends on the nature and seriousness of the behaviour. Deductions are recorded in the national database once the decision takes effect, and the driver is notified.
Stopping on an expressway outside a designated area carries 6 points, half of the total, so planning rest stops in advance is a good habit. Points attach to the licence holder, while some camera notices go to the vehicle owner, so please read the rental contract carefully and see our guide on notices and rental cars. If you would rather not drive on your trip, a car with a driver is another option.
Tip from Car Rental Vietnam: Check your licence expiry date before the trip; an expired licence means you cannot collect a self-drive car even if it is booked.
All 12, after 12 months without deductions.
The licence cannot be used until a test is passed after at least 6 months.
They attach to the licence holder.
Rather not risk your licence points on holiday? Send your pickup point, group size and dates; quotes include the driver's wage and road tolls, and our team confirms everything with you before you book.

Points apply to the licence of the person who commits an offence. Drive within limits and keep the rental contract and times in case a notice arrives later.
If you are unsure about the rules, a car with driver is an easy alternative.
See 2025 traffic law for tourists and self-drive or driver.
How many points does a licence have? Twelve.
Can points be restored? The rules allow it after a period without offences.
