Sam Son by car: the expressway from Hanoi, Truong Le mountain and the beach out of season. Sam Son is in Thanh Hoa province, which kept its name after 2025. It is about 170–180 km from Hanoi, usually 2.5–3.5 hours, so a two-day weekend fits well.
Take the Phap Van – Cau Gie – Ninh Binh expressway and carry on along the North – South expressway into Thanh Hoa, exit near the city and head to the coast. Summer weekends are busy, but from October the road is much clearer.
The sea is cold now and the north-east monsoon blows hard, so swimming is off. In return the seafront is quiet, walks and the Truong Le climb are pleasant and rooms are easy to book. Some beachfront eateries close for winter, so eat in the centre.
Thanh Hoa fermented pork rolls (nem chua) travel well as gifts. At the seafood market, ask the price per kilo first. On windy days, keep off rocks at the water's edge.
Families: a 7-seater. Company year-end trips: a 29-seater. Carry on to Nghe An: Nghe An and Cua Lo; Hanoi pickup: car rental in Hanoi.
For Sam Son you can choose a car with driver (fuel and tolls included) or self-drive, including VinFast EVs. Every quote is 10% off.
Yes for quiet walks and seafood; not if you want to swim.
Usually 2.5–3.5 hours depending on where and when you leave Hanoi.

Sam Son, in Thanh Hoa, is roughly three hours from Hanoi via the North–South expressway. From June to August weekends are crowded; arrive before noon to find parking near the beach, or stay on a weekday. Outside summer, the town is quiet and some restaurants close, but the beach walk and Doc Cuoc temple are still worth a visit. Pu Luong is a few hours inland if you want hills after the sea.
