Ha Long Bay is roughly 150 to 170 km from central Hanoi. Using the expressway link through Hai Phong, the drive usually takes about two and a half to three and a half hours, depending on traffic leaving Hanoi.
Cruises depart from different piers, including Tuan Chau and the Bai Chay and Ha Long International Cruise Port area. Ask your cruise operator for the exact pier and check-in time, then give it to your driver. Arriving at the wrong pier is the most common avoidable mistake.
