Administrative changes to know

Since 1 July 2025 the new Phu Tho combines former Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh, centred in Viet Tri.

The two-tier model (province, then commune or ward) applies from 1 July 2025, so old district names no longer appear on new documents. When booking for Viet Tri, old names, new names or a map pin all work.

Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle

Noi Bai to Viet Tri is about 60 km on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, about an hour.

Hung Kings Temple

The site has Lower, Middle and Upper temples; the climb takes about an hour. The car waits at the gate.

Hung Kings Temple and the midlands

The Hung Kings Temple site includes the Lower Temple, Thien Quang pagoda, Middle and Upper temples, the tomb and the Well temple. Hung King worship in Phu Tho was inscribed by UNESCO in 2012. Electric carts run from the main gate to the foot of the hill.

Xoan singing of Phu Tho is also UNESCO-listed and performed in the original guilds of Kim Duc and Phuong Lau near Viet Tri. The Long Coc tea hills in Tan Son, with hundreds of rounded hills, are about 70 km away.

Hung Temples and the ancestral land

The Hung Temples on Nghia Linh mountain, Thanh Mieu ward, Viet Tri, include the Lower Temple, Thien Quang pagoda, Middle and Upper Temples, the Hung King tomb and the Well Temple. About 500 stone steps lead to the Upper Temple. The Hung Kings commemoration on the 10th of the third lunar month is very busy; Hung King worship has been UNESCO intangible heritage since 2012. The Hung Vuong Museum at the foot shows Van Lang-era artefacts.

Viet Tri sits at Bach Hac junction where the Lo and Thao rivers meet the Da to form the Red River. Phu Tho's Xoan singing is UNESCO-listed, with Xoan guilds in Kim Duc and Phuong Lau. Since 2025 the new Phu Tho combines Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh, centred in Viet Tri. Specialities include banh tai, Thanh Son sour pork, Lam Thao fermented fish, Doan Hung pomelo and Phu Tho tea.

From Hanoi Viet Tri is about 80 km on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, about 1.5 hours. During the commemoration leave early as parking is far from the gate.
