Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 the new Da Nang combines former Da Nang and Quang Nam.
Since 1 July 2025 local government has two tiers: province or city, and commune or ward. Districts no longer exist, but old names are still used every day. When booking in Quang Nam, write your address the way you know it or send a map pin; drivers understand both old and new names.
Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
Hoi An to My Son is about 40 km; Cua Dai pier has boats to Cu Lao Cham. Da Nang to Tam Ky is about 70 km.

Hoi An with a private car
Cars are restricted in Hoi An ancient town; the car stops at lots near Tran Hung Dao or Phan Chau Trinh and you walk in. The ancient town ticket covers several old houses, assembly halls and the Japanese Bridge. In the evening lanterns float on the Hoai River.
Outside the old town are Thanh Ha pottery village, Tra Que vegetable village and the Bay Mau coconut forest with basket boats, 3–5 km away; short drives with the car waiting.
Hoi An, My Son and Cu Lao Cham
Hoi An Ancient Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, with the Japanese Bridge, Tan Ky and Phung Hung houses and the Fujian and Cantonese assembly halls. Entry tickets are sold at checkpoints. On full-moon nights electric lights go off and lanterns float on the Hoai River. Thanh Ha pottery, Tra Que vegetable and Kim Bong carpentry villages are near enough to cycle.
My Son sanctuary in Duy Xuyen, about 40 km from Hoi An, is a Cham temple complex from the 4th–13th centuries and a World Heritage Site since 1999; arrive at opening to avoid the heat. Cu Lao Cham, about 15 km from Cua Dai port, is a biosphere reserve with Bai Lang fishing village, Hai Tang pagoda and snorkelling; boats stop in rough seas. Since 2025 Quang Nam is part of Da Nang city.
Specialities include cao lau, mi Quang, Tam Ky chicken rice, Banh Mi Phuong, Cau Mong roast veal and smashed rice cracker. An Bang and Cua Dai beaches are about 4–5 km from the old town.
Planning notes for Quang Nam
From Hoi An Da Nang airport is about 30 km, around 40 minutes via the coastal Vo Nguyen Giap road or Le Van Hien. For early flights book the car about 2.5 hours before departure.
