About Hoa Binh

The Hoa Binh dam and lake
The Hoa Binh hydropower plant on the Da River was built from 1979 to 1994. Boat trips on the reservoir visit Thac Bo cave, the Thac Bo temple and Muong and Dao villages by the water. Bich Ha pier is the usual boarding point.
Muong culture shows in stilt houses, gongs and dishes such as bamboo rice, local pork and forest greens. The Muong Cultural Space Museum in Hoa Binh city displays many Muong artefacts.

Mai Chau, about 140 km from Hanoi, has the White Thai villages of Lac and Poom Coong with stilt houses, homestays, brocade weaving and cycling through paddies. Thung Khe pass on Highway 6 has white-rock sections. Hoa Binh lake on the Da River has Thung Nai pier with boats to Thac Bo cave, the Thac Bo temple and Muong and Dao villages. The Hoa Binh hydropower plant has a Ho Chi Minh statue on Ong Tuong hill.
Kim Boi has hot mineral springs and spa resorts about 75 km from Hanoi. Hoa Binh is Muong country with stilt houses, gongs and Mo Muong chant, listed as national heritage. Since 2025 Hoa Binh is part of the new Phu Tho province. Specialities include bamboo rice, local pork, Da River fish, rice wine in jars and Cao Phong oranges.
The Hoa Lac – Hoa Binh expressway cuts Hanoi to Hoa Binh city to about 1.5 hours.
