About Gia Lai

Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
Pleiku to Quy Nhon is about 170 km via An Khe pass, about 3.5 hours.
Highlands to sea
A 3–4 day route: Pleiku and Bien Ho, then down to Quy Nhon for the beach.
Pleiku and coffee country
Around Pleiku are Bau Can tea hills, Ia Grai pine forest and the Japanese-style Minh Thanh pagoda. The dry season, about November–April, is easiest; in November yellow wild sunflowers line the roads. The tea hills near Bien Ho lake are a popular stop.
Kon Tum is about 45 km from Pleiku, with its wooden church and the Kon Klor communal house; half a day is enough.
Down to Quy Nhon
From Pleiku to Quy Nhon the road passes An Khe town and An Khe pass, with an optional stop at the Tay Son Thuong Dao relic. In Quy Nhon you can enjoy the beach, Ky Co, Eo Gio or Ghenh Rang. One car for the whole route avoids changing transport between highlands and coast.

Gia Lai dry pho, also called two-bowl pho, serves noodles in one bowl and broth in another. Also try crab paste noodles, grilled chicken with bamboo rice and coffee from around Chu Se and Chu Prong. Chu Se pepper is a common gift to take home.
New Gia Lai: highlands to sea
Since 2025 the new Gia Lai combines Gia Lai and former Binh Dinh, stretching from the Pleiku plateau to the Quy Nhon coast over the An Khe pass. An Khe town has the Tay Son Thuong Dao relic site. Phu Cuong falls in Chu Se drops from basalt cliffs. There are Bien Ho tea fields and Ia Ly lake on the Se San. Pleiku to Quy Nhon is about 170 km on Highway 19.
Planning notes for Gia Lai
Gia Lai is home to Jrai and Bahnar communities with communal houses, tomb-abandonment rites and gongs. Kon Ka Kinh and Kon Chu Rang are forest reserves. The dry season from November to April is sunny, suiting volcano trips and wild sunflower fields.
