About Dong Thap

Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 the new Dong Thap combines former Dong Thap and Tien Giang, centred in My Tho.
The two-tier model (province, then commune or ward) applies from 1 July 2025, so old district names no longer appear on new documents. When booking for Dong Thap, old names, new names or a map pin all work.

Sa Dec and Cao Lanh
Sa Dec flower village grows plants on raised trellises over fields, with a huge range of ornamental flowers; the Huynh Thuy Le house is linked to Marguerite Duras's novel The Lover. Cao Lanh has the tomb of scholar Nguyen Sinh Sac.
Sa Dec, Tram Chim and Gao Giong
Sa Dec flower village in Tan Quy Dong grows flowers on raised bamboo frames over paddies, busiest in the last lunar month before Tet. Nearby is the Huynh Thuy Le house, linked to Marguerite Duras's novel The Lover, mixing French and Chinese styles. Kien An Cung, a Fujian Chinese temple with carved wooden doors and ceramic figures, is also in town.
Tram Chim National Park in Tam Nong is a Dong Thap Muoi wetland and a Ramsar site since 2012; sarus cranes visit in the dry season, though in recent years very few. Visitors take motorboats through melaleuca, lotus fields and sedge meadows. Gao Giong eco-area in Cao Lanh has melaleuca forest, a stork garden and rowing boats, busy in the flood season from August to November.
Dong Thap specialities include Sa Dec noodle soup, Lai Vung fermented pork, Lai Vung pink tangerines ripening at Tet, linh fish and sesbania flowers in flood season, and Thap Muoi lotus. Xeo Quyt relic site in Cao Lanh is a resistance base in melaleuca forest with bunkers and monkey bridges. One day can cover Sa Dec in the morning, Cao Lanh at noon and Gao Giong in the afternoon.
