Mai Chau by car: the route, Lac and Pom Coong villages, and the season up to Tết. Mai Chau is now Mai Chau commune, Phu Tho province (merged from Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh in 2025). This White Thai valley is about 135–140 km from Hanoi, well suited to a two-day weekend.
From Hanoi, take the Hanoi – Hoa Binh expressway then Highway 6 over Thung Khe pass into the valley; usually 2.5–3.5 hours depending on traffic. Thung Khe is often foggy at night, so travel in daylight. See Hanoi to Mai Chau private car.
In early October many fields are still golden; after the harvest the valley is quieter. December and January are cold with morning mist. Near Tết you may see early plum or peach blossom on the slopes, depending on the year.
Bamboo-tube rice, free-range chicken and grilled stream fish are common homestay dishes. Village lanes are narrow, so park at the village car park and walk; keep evenings quiet as many families host guests overnight.

Travelling to Mai Chau with young children? Ask in advance and we will fit child seats. Year-end prices run higher; Tết bookings take a deposit of about 10%.

Yes, but one night in a homestay is more relaxed and avoids the pass after dark.
Mai Chau was part of Hoa Binh, which merged into the enlarged Phu Tho province in July 2025. From Hanoi it is about 140 km, roughly three and a half hours. The Thung Khe pass on the way has viewpoints; stop only in proper pull-outs. Mai Chau combines well with Moc Chau, an hour further on, for tea hills and plum blossom in early spring.
