Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 Ly Son is a special zone of the new Quang Ngai (former Quang Ngai and Kon Tum).
The two-tier model (province, then commune or ward) applies from 1 July 2025, so old district names no longer appear on new documents. When booking for Ly Son Island, old names, new names or a map pin all work.

Be island (An Binh) is a 15–20 minute boat ride from the main island, with clear water.
Flagpole, Hang pagoda and Hon Mu Cu
Big Island has Hang pagoda in a seaside cave, Thoi Loi mountain with an old crater and a national flagpole at the summit. A speedboat to Small Island (An Binh) takes about 20 minutes. Hon Mu Cu is a rock arch near shore, lovely at sunset. The island is known for garlic grown in coral sand.
Getting to Ly Son
To reach Ly Son, drive to Sa Ky port in Quang Ngai and take a 30–45 minute speedboat. Sa Ky is about 50 km from Chu Lai airport and 140 km from Da Nang. Boats run several times in the morning and early afternoon and may pause in rough seas. On the island people use electric carts, motorbikes or small cars; mainland cars do not cross.
Ly Son and the crossing
Ly Son is about 30 km from Sa Ky port, about an hour by fast boat; boats stop in rough seas. The island has To Vo arch, Hang pagoda, Thoi Loi mountain, Be island with clear water and garlic fields. Am Linh temple and the Hoang Sa Flotilla exhibit honour sailors who defended sovereignty; the Khao le the linh Hoang Sa rite falls in the second–third lunar months.
