Administrative changes to know
Since 1 July 2025 former Dak Nong joined the new Lam Dong.

Dak Nong Geopark
The Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised in 2020, has long volcanic cave systems in Krong No, extinct craters and waterfalls such as Dray Sap, Gia Long and Dak G'Lun. Some caves are visited only with a guided tour, so register ahead.
Dray Sap and Gia Long falls lie by the Dak Lak border, about 25–30 km from Buon Ma Thuot, and fit into a Buon Ma Thuot trip.
Geopark and waterfalls
Dak Nong has been a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2020, with volcanic caves in Krong No, some hundreds of metres long. Dak G'lun and Lieng Nung falls near Gia Nghia, and Gia Long and Trinh Nu falls on the Serepok in Cu Jut are common stops. Ta Dung lake, dotted with islets and called the Ha Long Bay of the Central Highlands, is about 45 km from Gia Nghia.
Since 2025 Dak Nong is part of the new Lam Dong province, with Gia Nghia still the main town. Highway 14 links Gia Nghia to Buon Ma Thuot, about 120 km, and Dong Xoai in Binh Phuoc. Residents include M'nong and Ede people; many villages keep gong music.
Specialities include coffee, pepper, durian, macadamia, Serepok catfish and rice wine in jars. The dry season from November to April makes waterfall roads easier.

From HCMC Gia Nghia is about 230 km via Binh Phuoc on Highway 14, about 5 hours. In the wet season from May to October tracks to falls and caves can be muddy, so check conditions first.
