About Dak Lak

After 1 July 2025 the district level was removed; new addresses show only the commune or ward and the province or city. Locals and drivers still use old names, so for Dak Lak write your address as you know it or share a map location.
Pick-up areas and choosing a vehicle
Buon Ma Thuot to Tuy Hoa is about 170 km via Highway 29. BMT airport is about 8 km from town; Tuy Hoa airport is south of Tuy Hoa.

About 55 km from BMT, with the M'nong Jun village and dugout canoes.
Buon Don and Ban Don
Buon Don, about 45 km from Buon Ma Thuot, has suspension bridges over the Serepok River, Ede, M'nong and Lao stilt houses and the tomb of the elephant-hunting king Khunjunop. Yok Don National Park next door is a large dipterocarp forest that sheds its leaves in the dry season.
Lak lake, Buon Don and Dray Nur falls
Lak lake in Lien Son Lak, about 55 km from Buon Ma Thuot, has the M'nong Jun village, longhouses, dugout canoes and Bao Dai's villa on a hill over the lake. Buon Don, about 40 km northwest, has suspension bridges over the Serepok, old stilt houses and the tomb of elephant-hunting king Khunjunop. Elephant tourism is shifting toward walking alongside elephants rather than riding.
Dray Nur and Dray Sap falls on the Serepok are about 25 km from the city and powerful in the wet season. The World Coffee Museum in Buon Ma Thuot has stylised longhouse architecture and brewing tools from many countries. Since 2025 the new Dak Lak includes former Phu Yen, adding the Tuy Hoa coast.
Coffee blossoms whiten the hills around February–March. Specialities include Robusta coffee, Dak Lak avocado, Krong Pac durian, grilled chicken with bamboo rice and red noodle soup.
Tips for Dak Lak
The Space of Gong Culture of the Central Highlands was inscribed by UNESCO in 2005, with performances in tourist villages. Buon Ho and Krong Pac are durian areas, harvested around July–September.
Extra notes on Dak Lak
From Buon Ma Thuot Tuy Hoa is about 170 km via Highway 29 or Highway 26 through Ninh Hoa, about 4 hours. Nha Trang is about 190 km over Phuong Hoang pass and Pleiku about 180 km on Highway 14. The highland wet season runs about May–October, with rain mostly in the afternoon.
